I kept having difficulty with the fondant tearing, so before I finished the cake, I knew it wasn't going to be entered in the competition.
I had never painted on fondant before with a stencil. In my practice run it worked really well. Unfortunately, once I decided not to enter the cake, I needed my husband to deliver it to the Ronald McDonald House. He needed to leave before the paint dried, so I didn't get to see how it looked once dry. I believe the splotchy patches would have disappeared if I waited to take the pictures.
I modeled the puppies using a tutorial from Lorraine at Extra Icing on the Cake and pictures from Bev at Sugar Bloom Cupcakes. They still need some work but overall I was happy with the results. They are supposed to be laying the way that our two dogs used to lay together.
I am learning a lot from all this cake making. I didn't charge enough for the WWE cake, I should have charged $10-$15 more than I did. I had no idea how time consuming the little patches would be. In the end though, it was a young single mom who ordered the cake and she may not have been able to afford a more expensive cake. I hope her son likes it.

Your fern cake is so cute. I think it turned out great.
Did you ever find a name for your cake truffles?
Nice to see you blogging again. I hope you enjoyed your vacation. The dogs looked so cute. Too bad you didn't enter the cake in the competition. The WWF belt looked o.k. for doing one the first time. I'm sure the boy loved it.
I like playing with fondant :)
